Gregory of Tours, who lived from A.D. 539-594, was a Catholic priest during the Dark Ages. Eventually he became bishop of the city of Tours in what is now France. His History tells the story of one of the Germanic kingdoms. In this excerpt, Gregory describes Clovis, who was king of the Franks from A.D. 481-511.
